W8 Speakinging June 30 - Monday
A1-B1 Vets Gen2 level
Main Aims
-
Review and consolidate student understanding of zero and first conditionals
Subsidiary Aims
-
Increase fluency in giving advice, stating consequences, and predicting outcomes
Procedure (84-90 minutes)
Procedure: In a circle or rows, one student says a conditional sentence. The next must build a logical chain: If the pet is dehydrated, we give it fluids If we give it fluids, it will recover faster If it recovers faster, the owner will be happy Continue 2–3 rounds. Instructor boards 2 strong chains and highlights use of both zero and first conditionals.
Task 1 – Clinic Board Game: What If...? Procedure: Students play in groups of 3–4 with a simple board. Each square contains a prompt: If the dog eats medicine by mistake... If the owner panics... If you don’t follow the schedule... Players take turns completing the condition using the appropriate form, and explaining their logic. Task 2 – Error Hunt & Rewrite Procedure: Pairs receive slips with incorrect conditional sentences (e.g., If the cat will be hungry, it cries). They must: Identify the mistake Correct it Explain the rule behind the fix Each pair rewrites 1 improved sentence on the board and reads it aloud. Task 3 – Personal Response Grid Procedure: Students fill a 3x3 grid with real or imaginary "if" statements from their own life or professional experience: If I forget my keys, I panic If I don’t sleep well, I make mistakes If a client doesn’t pay attention, they will get the instructions wrong They must then interview 2 classmates and collect 2 conditionals from each.
Procedure: Instructor calls out clinic or life situations. Students must quickly give a conditional response using the correct form. Example prompts: A pet eats something strange The client shows up late The weather changes suddenly You skip breakfast Encourage speed but accuracy. End by highlighting 2–3 model sentences from students.
