Description

In this lesson, the students are going to practise their listening skills. In addition; they are going to practise and learn some vocabulary to make the listening activity understandable for them. The lesson will start with the lead-in about the topic to engage the students, and then the students will have some vocabulary practice. Then the students will have pre, while and post - listening activities. The lesson will end up with the discussion on the topic.

  • To provide clarification and practice of the words on places in the context of places and sights

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To engage the students I will put different pictures of a beach, a museum,a river, a house, a flat, a road, etc on the board or show them on slides. However, I will not say the topic of the lesson yet. The ss will look at the pics, trying to guess the topic of the lesson. After the ss talk for 5 or 6 minutes, I am going to put the pic of the circle saying PLACES in it. The ss will have the idea that we are going to talk about PLACES.

pre- teach vocabulary (6-8 minutes) • To provide the students with some words that may be challenging for the listening acivity

The students will match the vocabulary with the places in the picture and put the numbers accordingly. Ss will have the list of vocabulary in their hands and the picture of the places are put on the walls , ss walk and look at the walls and put the number of the words in their cards. While ss are engaged in task T is putting the words that she is going to teach. After giving some clarification on the new words, the teacher asks the question to sum up the vocabulary section, for example, which things are important to you and where do you go on holiday?

Pre-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will look at the photo slides on the screen/ on the board, the pictures are about Auckland, Keswick and Eyeries. To prepare them for the listening activity the teacher is going to ask them about the pictures they see on the screen. The teacher will ask the questions such as; Which one is a big city, a village, or a small town, do you think? What else do you see in the photos eliciting the vocabulary words about the places? The students will engage in the discussion in pairs, then as a whole class and speak about the details that they see in the photos, for example, a road, the sea, a lake, mountains, etc. Eventually the studnets will get the idea that they are going to listen to the material about these cities and get more interested in listening and get more information

While-Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

In gist listening section the students are going to listen to the material about three different cities/small towns/ villages.While listening to the material the students willl hear three conversations A-C and they match the conversations with the photos. Then the ss will check the answers in pairs,and with the teacher.

While-Listening #2 (8-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

In this part of the listening, the students will listen to the same conversation to get more details about the places. They will answer some questions: Where he/she lives now. Where his/her family lives? Where he/she goes on holiday? Where can you see a beautiful lake? Where can you see a lot of mountains? Are there any cheap places to stay? Where? The students will listen individually, answer the questions, if they need more listening the teacher will play the audio again. After that, the students will check their answers in pairs, and then the whole class and the teacher will give the feedback on the answers.

Post-Listening (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

As a post-listening activity, the teacher will arrange a speaking activity. The students will talk about the places they would like to visit or travel for their holidays and tell their reasons to travel to these places? The discussion will be about Auckland, Keswick and Eyeries. Then the students may add some other famous places that they would like to see. Finally, the discussions will be led as a group discussion talking to a whole class. The teacher will display the questions on the WB
