Description

In this lesson, students will learn to talk and ask about dates correctly in the context of special days and be able to form them using the ordinal numbers.

Materials

Abc Important dates
Abc Birthday question / Ordinal numbers handout
Abc Listening/Dates/face2face Elementary Student's Book
Abc ordinal numbers

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of important dates using the ordinal numbers in the context of real life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency in speaking about dates and ordinal numbers as well as some listening practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

WRITE the number 7 on the board (T's birthday) and ASK Ss WHAT'S THIS? - a number etc. ELICIT 'birthday' (If DIFFICULT give a CLUE, SAY 'it's important for me' MIME , the candles on a cake maybe, draw a cake) GET Ss to REPEAT it's your birthday, birthday.. SAY 'ASK ME the question????? Try and ELICIT "when is your birthday?" WRITE it on the board, the question! Only SAY ( SHOWING the number 7 on w/b ) It's on the 7th of June.

Test #1 (2-3 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

SAY, IN YOUR GROUPS. Then POINT AT the groups. ASK each other ... SHOWING the board, When's your birthday and SPEAK to each other carefully MONITOR here to get an idea of the level of the class PREPARE your slideshow!!!! for the next stage.

Teach (15-18 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I HEAR good TALKING. So HOW do we say it? OUR BIRTHDAY? Show 7, do we NEED something else? ELICIT months and do a quick REVISION show Ppt We START with JANUARY.. Go through tricky pronunciation DRILL tricky ones, get Ss to say, April, July..Write the stresses maybe. We write them with CAPITAL LETTERS! Then MOVE ON to ORDINAL NUMBERS, try and ELICIT how we normally say them WRITE 1. 2. or 1st... ELICIT! and then MOVE on to the numbers and dates.. SHOW the numbers on the board DRILL tricky PRONUNCIATION handout worksheets and NUMBER CARDS for each group, ask them to put them in order again. MONITOR then FEEDBACK W/C POINT AT / WRITE My birthday is ON the SEVENTH of June Highlight on and the ordinal number! SAY and DRILL

Test #2 (2-3 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

SAY to Ss work IN PAIRS , ask and answer the question! MONITOR do FB!

PREPARE Ss to the listening activity YOU NEED TO POINT at the difference between the DATE and DAY SAY How about today? Try and ELICIT otherwise. Write 'What's today's date?' ELICIT and write on the board ELICIT tomorrow, CCQ, so now is which day and mime tomorrow?? maybe?? draw on board? GIVE HAND/outs ASK to fold (or prepare this before!)

Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • listening skills

Ss listen and fill in the gaps for ex.6 a Check IN PAIRs then WC then listen and CIRCLE the correct answer on 7a Check IN PAIRs then WC

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

TO set the CONTEXT SAY OK birthday is important .. what else??? MIME marriage , ELICIT : wife/husband/daughter/son/mother/father's birthday Maybe also WEDDING ANNIVERSARY ASK Ss to unfold w/sheets. WRITE 4 questions on the paper ALONE starting with WHEN? DO ICQ DO we work alone? YEs Everybody STAND UP and CHANGE your sheets and ASK and answer the questions!
