Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in listening for gist, specific information and detail

Subsidiary Aims

  • To raise Ss' awareness of pause fillers and repetition. To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency in the context of mysterious experience and projecting the voice sound naturally by using examples of speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will place a picture of a teddy bear on the board. I will cover my head as an act to show that I am sleeping and in a dream state. I will tell students my imagined short story personalizing it with a dream about me falling while sleeping. I will ask Ss if they have ever had a similar experiences. II will have pictures of the sleeping, a person falling, and a person feeling as though they are leaving their body. I will ask students to look at the list of mysterious experiences on the slide and if they have ever heard of these things before. I will not go into much detail at this point as the Ss will be interacting with each other to answer the questions on the mysterious list later on in the lesson.

Vocabulary Pre-teaching/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will decide on what vocabulary items that T will need to pre-teach (as described below) and T will place on the overhead projector with emphasis made on the pronunciation of the chosen words from the text to help in familiarizing words from the audio script for the lesson. T will drill students to assist them with the correct sounds. Students will be given handouts as well to keep and utilize in the lesson. Vocabulary Physical /ˈfɪz.ɪ.kəl/ adjective Amazing /əˈmeɪzɪŋ/ adjective Disappear /ˌdɪsəˈpɪər/ verb Experience /ɪkˈspɪəriəns/ noun Consciousness /ˈkɒnʃəsnəs/ noun

While-Listening for Gist/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T will play audio file for students to gather minute detail/gist of the stories of the 4 speakers. T will tell student that they are going to listen to 4 people talk about mysterious experiences that they have had. Ss will listen and then match the speakers with the experiences in ex. 1. T will get brief FB from Ss.

Listening for details/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T will inform Ss that they will listen to 4 people again speaking about mysterious experiences they have had. Ss will focus on words and numbers and refer to/why they were mentioned by the speakers. Ss will work in pairs. T will ask Ss to read through the task before playing the audio again. Ss will then compare their answers with the handout answers on wb

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will work in groups of 4 and express to each other using the examples of pause fillers, repetition, and using natural expression. They will tell each other if they have ever experienced anything mysterious. T will then ask for examples from each group monitoring for pause fillers and repetition. T will praise and thank Ss before wrapping up lesson.
