Description

In this lesson the students will have the opportunity to review the verb forms of past tenses within the context of a mysterious story. They will do several exercises allowing them to practice the different past tenses, including a listening exercise to clarify pronunciation. They will follow this up with a speaking activity within the context of the lesson and the different verb forms.

Main Aims

  • To review and extend students awareness of past simple, past perfect and past perfect continious and to give controlled and semi-controlled practice of these within the context of a mysterious story.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students opportunity to practice speaking for fluency implementing the target language.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Use story telling to set lesson context and engage students

T puts Ss in pairs (detectives and suspects) Ss (detectives) to ask Qs to Ss (suspects) "What did you do 3 nights ago? (Saturday night)" so Ss can use different past tenses T to monitor how familiar Ss are with the tenses Some "detectives" to re-tell where their "suspects" were on Saturday night

Grammar Presentation (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through verb tense and listening activities

T to show Ss model sentence on board T to elicit from Ss the use of the past tense verbs WC confirmation of meaning Give HO with sample sentences and ask for predictions

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss to work in pairs on ex. 1, p. 46 Put on board and discuss form with Ss S to WC feedback T ask Ss to predict how sentences will be pronounced in ex. 1, p. 47 Ss to tell each other in pairs Ss to listen to recording and then repeat (as group, as sections, one by one)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and allow students to practice TL

T to split students in groups (A, B, C) T to give grammar activity - to choose correct verb form, ex. 2, p. 47 Ss work alone, check answers in pairs Do all the exercises as WC to check understanding T to play mystery music to set mood in class Ss to think why man from story was in bandages Ss to fill correct verb form in ex. 3, p. 47, grammar WC feedback

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

Ss to stay in A, B, C groups T to show sentences on board and do 1-2 examples with own experience Ss to work in groups to write sentences All Ss from group A together, group B, etc. to share with each other answers Some students to share their own answers with WC
