Main Aims

  • Students will learn about the past tense with the verb to be and adjective to describe themselves, others and objects in the past.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To get students focused and ready to learn.

Play a dance video

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Introduce adjectives with I am. This is not the first time the students are exposed to adjectives. Give them a minute to describe them selves to their seat mates. Then do as a class with volunteers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show some pictures of the teacher as a child. Try to let the kids see if they can find the teacher. Make sentences with I was and explain it's for the past.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Practice with pictures to make past sentences. Play cup order Students race to put cups in the correct order (by colour) after making the sentence.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

On screen board game. Use the spider man snakes and ladders game from tays teaching tool kit and flash cards.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students should have previously had their parents send in physical copies of the student's pictures from when they were even younger. Let the students talk with their seat partners with when I was little I was… Students will either agree or maybe suggest another adjective. Hang adjective cards on the board. Ask team by team to hang their pictures under the adjectives and make a sentence
