Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in reading for gist and detail in the context of online friendships

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell personal story about how all my family sit around the dinner table but on their phones. Show picture of family all on phones. Ask Ss whether they think this is a good thing - get them to talk to one another in pairs about how this has affected their relationships. Get WC FB and consider about what they think.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Introduce new vocabulary through the worksheet - ask Ss to do PW to work out answers. Get WC FB for quick answers. Demonstrate the activity by asking a S to throw a soft ball to me, I will then use one of the new vocab words in a sentence. I will pass it on and say what word I want the next S to use.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask Ss to look at Ex 2a. Let them talk in PW for 2-4 minutes. Monitor Ss and look for a good answer, so you can ask them to speak after the exercise. Maybe elicit some other answers if no one can think of other reasons why social networking sites are bad for friendships. Get Ss to read article and consider 2b in PW. Monitor and ask 1-2 students whether they found their ideas in the article

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Tell Ss to look at Ex 3 and get them to re-read text and answer the questions.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss some of the questions in Ex 4 in WC discussion. Try to encourage the Ss to talk to one another about the issues.
