A1-B1 Vets Gen2 level

Description

Students will improve listening comprehension by following emergency instructions and recognizing conditionals in spoken English

Materials

Abc Audio Clips
Abc Worksheets

Main Aims

  • Improve comprehension of emergency-related spoken English

Subsidiary Aims

  • Recognize and complete zero and first conditionals in context

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Procedure: Write on the board: What should a vet assistant do in an emergency? Students brainstorm and list key actions: Stay calm Apply pressure Call the vet Monitor breathing Prompt for conditional rephrasing: If the pet is bleeding, apply pressure If the owner panics, the situation could get worse

While-Reading/Listening #1 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Material: Audio Clip – Emergency phone call to a clinic Task: Students listen and answer two gist comprehension questions: What is the emergency? What does the vet recommend? Brief pair check and full-class discussion. Instructor boards key phrases.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (18-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Play the audio again. Students complete a worksheet with missing zero/first conditional sentences. Example: If the bleeding doesn’t stop, _____ If you don’t have gloves, _____ After completing the worksheet, check answers in pairs or as a class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Procedure: In pairs, one student plays the worried client, the other the vet assistant. They summarize the audio using conditional structures. Switch roles after 2–3 minutes. Encourage phrases like: If it happens again, bring the pet immediately If she’s still shaking, keep her warm

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Procedure: Instructor highlights 2–3 common mistakes heard during pair work and models corrected versions on the board. Students repeat and clarify grammar patterns.
