Subsidiary Aims
-
Students respond appropriately to emergency situations in English.
-
Increase fluency and confidence in problem-solving discussions
Procedure (82-90 minutes)
Procedure: Board prompt: What do you do if a dog stops breathing? Elicit initial reactions from students. Then introduce: Zero conditional (general truths): If a dog eats chocolate, it gets sick First conditional (future outcomes): If you give him charcoal, he will feel better Students brainstorm 2 examples of each in pairs and share with class. Instructor boards a few strong responses.
Procedure: Hand out cards with conditional sentence halves Students match beginning and ending parts (e.g., If a cat is bleeding… / … apply pressure to the wound) After matching, they must write 2 of their own full conditional sentences (1 zero, 1 first) Optional Extension: Instructor reads a sentence half aloud, students race to complete it correctly.
Procedure: Groups receive 4 different non-roleplay veterinary scenarios (e.g., allergic reaction, broken limb, missing pet). Each group must: Describe the problem Create 2 zero conditionals and 2 first conditionals related to the situation Share solutions with the class Examples: If a pet has a seizure, stay calm If the owner panics, the situation will get worse Conditional Dice Game Procedure: Students roll a die and receive a sentence start from a numbered list (e.g., If I see blood... / If a client calls in a panic...). They must complete it with a correct and logical conditional. Variation: Work in teams. Each correct answer = 1 point. Most complete and accurate team wins. Time: 20–22 min
Procedure: Students write one zero and one first conditional from today on paper. Instructor selects 3–4 to correct and highlight on the board. Class helps edit for accuracy and fluency.
