Description

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to review the verb forms of present tenses in a personalized way. They will do several exercises allowing them to practice the different present tenses. They will follow this up with a short speaking activity related to the overall context of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To review and extend Ss' awareness of present tenses (simple, continous and perfect) and related time phrases, and to give controlled and freer practice in them, in the context of family and family history.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency

Procedure

Language focus (6-8 minutes) • Focus students on the time phrases in relation to the verb forms

T will handout the list of time phrases to each student and will ask students for ideas to what tense the phrases are related T will give several examples using time phrases from the different sets T will set Ss in pairs and explain to them how to complete exercise 1 Ss from different pairs give answers to everyone in class

Personalisation (time phrase practice) (10-12 minutes) • To allow students to practice the differen time phrases with several verb tenses

T will give example with own family using 1 time phrase from each set T will instruct students to work alone and write 3 sentences about their families using one time phrase from each set Ss will compare sentences with their peers Ss will share some sentences with the whole group T to monitor accuracy of use T to summarize any common problems and address them

Time phrase practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with opportunity to practice further using present tenses

T will split students in groups of 3 T will give 12 cards to each group with the time phrases from the three sets in exercise 3 and give instructions to Ss that they need to take turns, pick a card and make a sentence (about themselves or their family) and share with the group. Make sure Ss know they should speak, not write the sentences. T to monitor work within the groups Ss to share some of the sentences with WC T to feedback on any problems

Verb forms (8-10 minutes) • Students will practice using verbs in one of the three present tenses

T to set exercise 4 as a reading task initially (make sure Ss understand they just need to read) T to ask students a couple of questions (Where is the person originally from? What does he do now?) to make sure they understand the general idea of the text Ss to work in pairs to fill in the gaps using the appropriate verb forms T to put up an answer key Ss will check their answers T to address any problems/questions

Speaking and Personalisation (5-7 minutes) • To allow students to practice the time phrases they've learned and round off the topic of family

T to show PPT slide with list of 10 questions about Your family T to ask each S to choose 4 of those 10 questions that he/she feels comfortable answering (option - a handout with the 10 questions for each student, rather than Ss copying them) T to give example with some of the questions and let Ss answer them as examples Ss to work in pairs to interview their partners T to do general FB
