Description

In this lesson, Ss will be introduced to letter of advice, while practicing their former knowledge in 2nd conditionals. They will also practice "should" in the context of giving advice to someone with a problem or dilemma. They will both practice their reading and writing skills (both receptive and productive) in the same lesson. Besides, they will have the opportunity to discuss with their classmates on the context, and share their own ideas and thus will practice speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a Letter in the context of giving advice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about dilemmas and problems in the context of giving advice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be given a H/O and will be given 3-4 minutes to think about the questions on the 9th exercise. Teacher will monitor and if needed, she will help with vocabulary and such. Then Ss will share their thoughts in pairs or groups. Feedback will be done by randomly choosing a student from each group/pair to answer the questions

Exposure #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

In this stage, Ss will be given a reading on a dilemma. They will be asked to read it alone. Then in their pairs/groups they will be asked to discuss possible solutions to the dilemma. Feedback will be done while Ss are sharing their ideas with the W/C.

Exposure #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

Ss will read the responses on their own. Then, in pairs they will discuss the responses. Feedback will be done while the students are sharing their opinions with the class.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Firstly, Ss will be asked to read and tick the possible things that a letter of advice might include on their own. Afterwards, they will compare their answers in their pairs or groups. Feedback will be made by teacher's asking random students "Why this (one of the things Ss have ticked) is part of a letter of advice?" Then, teacher will give the answers, and secondly will ask them to find the things in the responses. Ss will be asked to check what they found in their pairs/groups. Later, teacher will show where those things were given in the responses as to provide certain answers.

Productive Task(s) (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will be given another dilemma. Firstly, they will be asked to read the problem alone. Then they will be given time to discuss the possible solutions. Secondly, they will be asked to write their own letter of advice for the problem. Meanwhile, teacher will monitor and provide assistance. Students will be given 5-6 minutes at least to complete their letter. Thirdly, Ss will be asked to read each others' letters and determine whose letter would be a best solution for them if they were the one with the same trouble. Fourthly, if there's still time, Ss will be introduced words/phrases, which indicate possibilities at different rates. At the end, if needed, teacher will provide delayed feedback on the language students have produced.
