Speaking Sessions Framework
B1 to B2 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification and review of academic vocabulary in a specific context
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation / debate format
Subsidiary Aims
-
To boost Ss' confidence and consolidate their interpersonal skills
Procedure (60-63 minutes)
The lessons start with reviewing previously presented lexical items throughout MFP, elicitation, flashcards, and online games.
Ss watch a short video on the topic to set the context and improve their understanding. This is followed by a post-watch question related to the video, which is discussed in pairs.
Ss are paired and the first question from the list will be asked by the teacher. Ss discuss the question for 2 minutes while the teacher monitors and takes notes to record any potential errors. Later, a few Ss are asked to share their answers with the class. Questions are listed in order of difficulty, starting with personal ones, and as the class goes through them, more abstract questions are asked.
Finally, a debate is conducted where Ss are put in groups of 4 or 5 (depending on the size of the class) within a 10-minute time limit, in which they prepare their arguments and reasons for 3 to 4 abstract and controversial questions. Subsequently, participants are encouraged to exchange their ideas and agree or disagree where necessary.
