In this lesson, students learn about "homophones" through guided discovery based on a reading text about the Christmas Tree. The lesson starts with a discussion about Christmas traditions. This is followed by presentation and reading exercise where students read about Christmas traditions. Finally, there is some controlled practice through comprehension questions and homophones and free practice via writing activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Christmas lexis in the context of Christmas traditions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of Christmas traditions
  • To provide process and product writing practice of ss' own sentences in the context of Christmas traditions


Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T displays two different pictures from past and today. T says "I’d like you to compare and contrast the pictures and say how you think the people in the photos are feeling and why."

Exposure (15-17 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a presentation.

T gives a presentation on "Ten Ages of Christmas", focusing on the evolution of Christmas traditions. The aim is to attract the attention of the students and to get them ready for the upcoming reading exercise on The Christmas Tree.

Clarification (1-2 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Clarifications are done through the synonyms of the words and also through some extra information about the history of Christmas.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss read the text about The Christmas Tree, answer the reading comprehension questions. T checks the answers and gives WC FB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss deal with the homophones. They need to change the incorrect words with the appropriate ones. They will find the words by themselves. T checks the answers and give WC FB. T also asks the students other homophones they remember. T writes down on WB.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Dealing with the homophones, Ss are now expected to write their own sentences by using the words in bold in the context of Christmas traditions. Challenge is always accepted in Stunning 9/C.........
