Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and deduction reading practice using a text about a personal story in the context of a day at the seaside

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of a day at the seaside

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T: "In groups of three, talk about these questions" S: share ideas

Gist Reading (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist reading tasks

T: "Read the three titles first, then you have 1 min to read the reading and guess the title. This is called Gist reading." ICQ: "Do you have to read every word?" No. Ss read individually T: "Discuss your title with a partner."

Detailed Reading 1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more a challenging detailed reading tasks

T: "With your partner, brainstorm scenarios that could ruin a day at the beach." Ss brainstorm T: Read the story and underline all the thing that went wrong in his story. Ss read T: Compare what you and your partner wrote with what you underlined. Is anything the same?

Detailed Reading 2 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with more a challenging detailed reading tasks

T: "Read the questions first, then read the text and write true or false next to each." ICQ: Will you read in pairs or indivi? Ss: read indiv T: "With your partner, check your answers"

Detailed Reading 3 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with more a challenging detailed reading tasks

T: Look at these definitions. They tell you in which line to look for the word. Dont forget to read around the words to get the context. Work indiv. you will check in pairs later. Ss work indiv T: Check in pairs Ss check and help each other T: show AnsKey

Deductive Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with more a challenging deductive reading task

T: "These sentences are summaries of the reading. While reading the story, try to put these summaries in order. Ss work indiv T: Check the order in pairs. T: monitors shows the ans key and focuses on those which were harder for the students to get.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T: "In groups of 3, share how a day at the beach was ruined for you." Ss talk (3 min) T: "Now chose which one wins, which one was the worst day at the beach?" Ss decide (1min) T: "Now join groups and share the story you chose and chose which one wins" Ss share (3min) T: "Finally, share the two stories to the class and you guys choose which one wins." Ss share WC (1min)
