Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present tense structures

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show students some photos of people who are not feeling relaxed. T will elicit: 'How are they feeling?' Get them in Pairs to answer this: 'what do you do relax?' FB: listen to 3 students in class to share what they do, put them on the board and Ss will decide which one they find interesting.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show Ss a photo of a woman on the WB. Introduce her as Sally. Then show them a photo of the book they had learned about in the previous lesson. Tell them Sally has read the book. Get Ss to read the text to find out what Sally thinks of the book? 'not useful'

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss are given a set of T/F sentences to mark. They should underline the sentences they mark in the text, so the target language is highlighted. Ss will check in pairs and so will they with the teacher.

Clarification (10-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will give Ss a mini GD sheet and they will analyse the highlighted structure together through some concept checking questions and time lines which come from the previous stage. T will check As. and then he will continue clarifying form and pronunciation on the WB.

Controlled Practice (6-9 minutes) • To prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will give Ss a gap fill in the same context. Ss will read the four paragraphs and choose the appropriate present tense. Ss will check in pairs and then with the teacher. Then get them in pairs to say who or what the paragraphs are about. T will listen to a few comments at the end of this stage.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will give Ss a questions sheet containing 10 questions about the context (feeling relaxed). Ss are given 2 minutes to think and collect their thoughts about themselves and then T will get them in pairs to discuss these with a partner. Then, T will walk around the class and collect errors. T will listen to a few comments form Ss talking about others and then he will correct the errors on the WB. NOTE: [if time is short, have Ss choose only 5 of the questions which they find favorable]
