Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a letter in the context of TV addiction

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T Shows pictures of some Turkish and International TV series and ask them if they have seen them or not. then in groups they discuss the 3 general questions about TV addiction that T gives them. After the discussion they have in groups T gets feedback from one or two groups.

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T gives Ss the text about the family who stopped watching TV. she gives them 40 seconds max to tell her if the family watch TV now. First Ss make a peer-check then they give the answer to the T with a justification.

True-False (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss read the text first and they answer the T-F questions that are related the text. (They also include the TL).They also underline where they find the answers. T gives 4 min to read and answer the questions. After they answer the questions first Ss do peer-check. At the end T has a WCFB.

Clarification (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T gives them a handout which has sentences from the text. Ss should match the sentences with the correct tense explanation(in pairs). They only have 1 min and then Ss check their answers with their group. Then T gives them the answer key.

Clarification 2 (5-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T Puts another 2 sentences from the text to the WB. I have read a book on UFOs this week. I have been reading a book on UFOs this week. One of them is written in Present Perfect Simple and the other one is written in Present Perfect Continuous. T asks these questions to clarify the meaning: Which sentence shows an activity that is still happening? Which sentence shows an activity that has finished? Which sentence focuses on~emphasizes the result of the activity? Which sentence focuses on the result of the activity? Then T writes the form on the board and drills the sentences in order to emphasize the pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives them a handout in which they have to chose the correct form. T underlines the fact that some forms both can be correct. They have 4 min to complete the task Then they compare their answers with their pair. T gives them an answer key . And asks for justification for some of the questions.

Semi controlled practice (5-10 minutes) • Practice speaking by using the TL

T gives a survey to students, asks them to stand up and ask 3 of their friends about what they have been doing for the last few days, since your birthday and today. T makes sure that Ss will talk with just 3 of their classmates and pick the most interesting activity. This activity will create a balance as they have been sitting until this activity now they will have a chance to walk around the classroom.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will be doing a writing activity in order to practice their productive skills and use the TL. Ss will write a letter. They can write their names on it but they should not write their friends name. T asks them to IMAGINE they have stopped watching TV and have not been watching for almost a year. Their letter should involve; What have you done so far this year? How this year been different from last year? What have you been doing recently? What have you been doing today? Then T collects the letters and mixes them and gives them to different students. T asks students to read the letter and guess who wrote it. After they guess T asks them to stand up and go the the person who they have guessed and ask 2 questions to find out if the guess was right or not.(eg Have you been going to movies instead of watching TV recently?) Check with max 3 people. T makes sure that they do not show their papers to each other. T can ask who were able to guess the person correctly.
