Description

In this lesson, students will practice listening through a discussion between three friends about the advantages and disadvantages of owning a car. They will do different tasks pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about for and against cars

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the advantages and disadvantages of owning a car.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Say good morning. Ask some students "how did you come to the class today?" Interact with their answers. Focus on that we have different ways of transportation.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Put students in pairs. Show them the material. Tell them they are going to discuss about different types of transportation. Tell them they have 3 minutes. Give them the question and let them start.

While-Listening 1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task

Show students the material. Tell them they are going to lesson to a discussion and then answer the questions. Give them the handouts. Tell them to read the two questions before they start listening. Play the track. Get each pair discuss about the answers. Elicit some answers.

While-Listening 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed and deduction listening task

Show students the material. Tell them they are going to listen again to see if these sentences are true or false. Give them the handouts. Give them 1 minute to read the sentences before they start listening. Play the track. Tell them to discuss their answers with their partners. Get them to peer check their answers. Elicit answers and write them on the board.

While-listening 3 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed and deduction listening task with some speaking practice.

Show students the material. Tell them they are going to listen again to answer these questions. Give them the handouts. Tell them to read the questions before they start listening. Play the track. Tell them to discuss their answers in groups of 4. Elicit some answers.

While-listening 4 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with listening for specific information practice

If I feel students are doing well with the tasks and timing will go as I planned to, I will do this task. Otherwise, I will skip this stage. Show students the material. Tell them they are going to listen for the last time to fill in the gaps with the missing words. Give them the handouts. Play the track. Get them to peer check their answers. Give them answer keys.

Post-Listening (4-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Divide students into different groups of 4. Show students the material. Tell them they are going to discuss this question in groups. Tell them they have 3 minutes to finish. Get them to start. Take some feed back.
