Description

In this lesson Ss listen to a recoding about a family holiday. they do a gist listening based on a photo which first they predict and then check their answers. then they will listen again for details and finally they listen for the third time to check their understanding based on a few -wh questions. the second half of the class will be devoted to a speaking activity in which Ss talk about their childhood holidays. The lesson will end by an delayed error correction.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about a family holiday in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a telling an anecdote in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask students: ' what do we need to do after a full year of hard work?' T will show a photo of a station wagon with luggage on top and children inside. "family holiday" T will get Ss to tell each other about two good things about holidays. WC FB: T will listen to one or two students.

Pre-Listening (5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will tell students they are going to listen to a person talking about his family holiday when he was a child and before that he will pre teach these words: * resemble * porcupine * gesticulate * veer

While-Listening #1 (listening for gist) (4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T will show Students a cartioon related to the listening. T will have students predict what is happening, they talk in pairs then T will play the recording. After recording they return to pairs to check. T will listen and check the answer.

While-Listening #2 (listening for details) (6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, listening tasks

T will hand Ss a set of T/F sentences, they read them quickly and then T will play the recording. Ss check their As in pairs and then T will listen to the As.

While-listening #3 (-wh questions) (5 minutes) • To provide Ss with more challenging detailed listening tasks

T will give Ss a set of information questions, they read them quietly and then T will replay the recording. FB on task: first in pairs and then WC. [NOTE: this stage will be omitted if time is running out, in favor of the sub aim of the lesson]

Post-Listening (5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will give Ss a find-sb-who sheet. T will get Ss to talk with everyone in the classroom to find people for their Qs. To avoid confusion for Ss and also be able to ask correctly, T will show them a demo. Feedback: T will listen to Ss when they share what they have found about others. (a few comments)

Pre speaking (4 minutes) • To prepare and collect their thoughts in order to talk about a childhood family holiday

Ss are given this HO with some Qs about their childhood family holiday.They should read and think about them for 4 mins. Ss should not answer and write down their answers fully but in key words.

While speaking (6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice for fluency

Ss are going to talk with two partners in class. first, they talk with the one next to them. In the second half of the allocated time, T will get them stand up and choose another person in the classroom. T will monitor and collect errors. [NOTE: If the first half does not go very well and Ss are slow, the second grouping will be omitted.]

Feedback and Error Correction (5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T will listen to few Ss about what they heard form other Ss and then will put the errors collected form the previous stage on the board to comment on.
