Description

In this lesson students will be practicing speaking in the context of a reading practice that leads to a comparison done as a speaking activity ,as well as going through some new vocabulary words with them by having a matching activity .

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversarion in the context of good deeds

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about good deeds in the context of helping other people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T : Hangs "charity" photo. What is charity ? Elicits answers. T: Is charity only by giving money to help other ? Hangs "giving money picture " Elicits : NO. Hangs a picture of " giving water as another type of charity" T : Charity is a good thing to do right ? Elicits : Right. T :Writes on the board " do a good thing = good ......." Give me another word instead of thing. Elicits good deeds if possible. If not , write good deeds .

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T: I have a friend, her name is "Hope" She works as a shop assistant . But she also volunteered for another job. She works in an organization, hangs picture of organization,and its cause. that answers phone calls for depressed people. She doesn't have much time to sleep, she's always working,she told me that she loved her night job more than her full time job. T: do you think "Hope" cares more for herself or other people ? Elicit. T: In pairs tell me words that best describe Hope,and why ? In pairs or as group ? Elicit answers. T : Writes : Altruistic = Doing things that show you care for others more than yourself. T : Advises students that they might come across a word they wouldn't know, we will discuss it together after reading the text. T : Gives instructions to read part of page 96, alone,not in pairs. Once you're done reading, check in pairs,which of the 2 men are more generous and why ? Gives handout. T: Vote which man is more generous .

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T : In groups of 3,talk about examples of altruistic behavior . ICQ : In groups or in pairs ? Give them 2 to 3 minutes. T : In your groups decide what is the most altruistic behavior that you know about . Gives another 1 minute for them to decide . T : Asks one student to move from each group to another,to share information of their first group with others . T : Gives another 3 minutes for groups to share ideas . T : Asks each of the groups to share something interesting/important they found out in their discussion .

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T : In pairs. Think of one altruistic behavior that you have done,and share that with your partner. Have you ever made any sacrifice for someone or something ? Agree with your partner which one is more of an altruistic behavior. T: Gives example, I have donated blood, I have donated money,agree on which one is more like an altruistic behavior. ICQ : In pair or as a group ? Give them 3-5 minutes to discuss. T : Asks each about the altruistic behavior they agreed on,then share with class. - If there is more time, give out a matching activity for some of the words in the lesson .
