Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Training to be a Geisha in the context of Japanese Culture

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Education

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In order to set the context , T shows some pictures that are related to the Japanese culture.(sushi, noodle, geisha, anime, pagoda, kimono, sumo wrestler, a ninja, cherry blossom) and ask Ss to do brainstorming in groups and tell the teacher other things related to the japanese culture . If they can not come with the word 'geisha' , T shows a picture of it as the text they will be reading is going to be about 'training to be a Geisha'

Pre Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T gives the text with an empty heading and asks them to choose the best option individually. T gives only 30 seconds so that they can get the general idea without reading any details. In this stage T should be really careful about making sure that Ss have only 30 minutes. After this T makes sure that they do not look at the text again as they will be putting the text in the correct order next. Other choices for the heading : a) History of Geishas b) Training to be a Geisha c) Japanese Culture

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before Ss read about Makiko's training to be a geisha they will read some sentences about geishas and decide if they are true or not so that they can get engaged with the topic. T makes sure they understand that they will get the answers of this activity AFTER they read the text.

Pre Reading (5-8 minutes) • To teach Ss the vocabulary that they need to understand the text.

Before reading the text T elicits some words from the text. -Preserve -Fascinated by -I don’t mind After eliciting the words T asks CCQs to clarify the meaning then drills the word so that ss can get the correct pronunciation. Finally, T Writes them on the board so that they can also see how to spell them..

while reading 1 (6-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

After T makes sure that Ss put the text away , T cuts the paragraph into 8 pieces and gives it to the ss. They have to put them into the correct order. Ss have to read each sentence detailed in order to find the correct order. When everybody finish, T tells them that they can open the original text and check if they were able to put the pieces in the correct order.

While reading 2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

As the students are informed about the text they can now return back to the true/false activity that they did before reading the text. T tells ss to return back to that activity and check their answers again (individually). After finishing the activity t tells them to do peer checking with the friend right next to them. T tells them also to think why it is true or false. Then T does a WCFB and asks them to justify their answers.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

With this activity Ss will be focused on their productive skill,;speaking. In groups, Ss will discuss it they had a daughter what would be the advantages and disadvantages of sending her to this school ? They will be practicing fluency by creating their own sentences but they will still be related to the topic.

If time activity (10-12 minutes) • To improve fluency by doing a freer speaking activity

If there is still time,T puts Ss into new groups by giving them numbers . Give out the cards. one per student. And ask students to go through the question. After reading about the Geisha training now students can compare what they have read with their own education with this activity.Pick some students to get general FB and finish the lesson
