Description

In this lesson, students are going to learn the grammar of indirect speech in the template of TEST TEACH TEST . At first, they will be given a test to do individually and see if they can answer any of the questions before learning the grammar. Next, they will grammar clarification. At the end, they will have a freer practice in the shape of writing to use the learnt lesson.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will tell the students a short story of his lunch the day before which includes an indirect sentence and ask students to tell him what grammar is he talking about. Story: Yesterday, I was eating a sandwich for lunch in ITI. I saw one of my friends came in. I told her she can have a share of my sandwich, but she said: "Thanks Mustafa, I have eaten lunch." She told me she had eaten lunch.

Test #1 (6-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

In this stage, students will be given a handout of containing a test of indirect speech. Students will be told that there is no failure for this test. They will be given 2 minutes to do the test. They will also see a note above the paper which says: Write SURE if you think your answer is correct and write NOT SURE if you doubt. When they are finished, they will sit in groups of three and explain to each other the answers they are sure about. If they answer all the questions correctly with a convincing reason for each sentence, teacher will give a little clarification and they will work on the productive skill. If not, teacher will give them a full clarification over the lesson.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

In this part, the teacher will write the title of the lesson on the board. Students will be given a handout containing a chart with tense changes and an example for each on it. They will be told not to read the paper and turn it over and the teacher will ICQ them. They will see a A3 paper stuck on the board containing the same chart, but with no example. Teacher will write two incomplete sentences., one direct and the other indirect speech just to show the students the shape of two sentences. Then He will write an example on the board. After that, students will turn over their papers. Each student will read a tense and its example to the whole class. At the end, the teacher will tell three or four students randomly a direct speech sentence and ask them to change it to indirect speech sentence with the help of the chart on the board. Then, they will take a look back at the first handout to check the correct answer in pairs.

Test #2 (5-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

In this section, students will get the last handout of a multiple-choice exercise. They will be told to fold the paper from the line in the bottom to avoid seeing the answer key. Teacher will ICQ them again. The will be given 2 minutes to do the exercise. Then they will check their answers with the answer key. In pairs they will check the answers together and tell each other the reason for the correct answer.

Free practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

If time, students will be asked to write three sentences of recent the things have told them about in indirect speech form and read it to their group members.
