Description

In his lesson, the past simple of regular verbs in affirmative, negative and question forms, will be presented to the Ss through a dialogue text in the context of going on holiday. This is followed by controlled practice through putting the verbs in past simple in (EX1,page 57), and then a semi-controlled activity where the Ss make questions form of the regular verbs in (EX3). Finally a freer practice of speaking skills by making questions in the past simple and answering them in pairs. Speaking EX 1 .

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of past simple regular verbs in positive form, and use of didn't and did in negative and question forms in the context of going on holiday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of deducing the meaning in the text about preparation for travel in the context of going on holiday
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice by asking and answering past simple questions.
  • To provide clarification of lexical set in the context of going on holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project or show the picture of the bag from p56 of the coursebook, on the board with differents items in it. Ask the Ss: What can you see? Give them a minute to discuss. Ask the Ss: When do we take those item with us? Elicit: going on holiday. Ask the Ss to match the names on the cards with the items in the picture. "Now match the names on these cards with the items in the picture" name. Feedback: check answers and drill few items.

Exposure (7-9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show the photo of Walter and Thelma and a picture of airplane. Ask the Ss what can you see? elicit 2 people in the car. Introduce the names : Walter and Thelma to the Ss Ask the Ss: where are they going? Elicit the airport, going on holiday. Give instructions to the Ss: now read the text and put tick next to the things they have in their bag? Check the Ss understanding of the instructions by asking them: ICQs: Are you reading? yes Are you ticking the words you find in the text? no Are you ticking the words they have in the bag? yes Group the Ss in pairs. Ss do the task. T monitor. Feedback: Ask the Ss to check their answers with different pair. Check the answers with whole class.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask the Ss: What does Walter say about the ipod? Elicit : I wanted the ipod Highlight the sentence on the W/B. Ask the Ss: What does Walter say about the guidebook? Highlight: You didn't remember. Ask the Ss: What does Thelma say? Elicit: Yes, I did. Ask the Ss: What does Walter say about the light? Elicit: Did you turn off the lights?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

CCQs: Point out at the sentence: I wanted the iPod. Ask the Ss: Is this about the past or the present? Draw the timeline onto the board mark the present on it and ask a S to mark the position of the verb: wanted. Elicit the verb wanted is in the past simple. Point to the word "wanted". Ask the Ss: Is this a noun? Elicit: verb. Ask the Ss: What's the ending of the verb : wanted? elicit : (ed) Ask Ss: Is it a regular or irregular verb? Elicit: a regular verb. Point out the "I" in the same sentence and ask the Ss "wanted is a verb what's "I" ?" Elicit: subject. Ask the Ss: What's the form in here? pointing at the: I wanted the ipod. Elicit: Subject + verb+ ed. Ask the Ss: How can we say this sentence: I wanted the iPod. using : He, She, they, we. Model and drill few sentences. Point out to the sentence: You didn't remember the guide book. Ask the Ss: Is this a positive sentence ? of which verb? Elicit: negative of the verb remember. Point out at the sentence: Did you turn off the lights? Ask the Ss: Is this positive, negative or a question? Elicit: a question form. Ask the Ss: What is the form of a question? Elicit: did+subject+verb in infinitive form. Model and drill some sentences, chorally and individually. I wanted the iPod /id/ I turned the lights off. /d/

Controlled Practice (8-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Show the Ss the copy of the HO: Ex1 p: 57 Give instructions to the Ss: Complete the sentences, Put the verbs in brackets into the past simple. check the Ss understand the task. ICQs: What tense are you using for these verbs? Are the verbs in the past or present? Elicit: past simple. Give out HOs Ss do the task T monitor and make sure the Ss doing the task. Ask the Ss to check their answers with other pairs Feedback: correct the answers with whole class. Highlight the verb: liked ask the Ss to pronounce the verb. Correct and highlight the ending /t/ in Iliked /t// in liked /laikt/ do some modelling and drilling chorally and individually.

Freer Practice (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

Give the Ss the instructions: (Speaking ex 1) Hold the HO and say: make questions in the past simple. ICQ: In what tense will you make the questions? Elicit: the past simple. Do the first question with whole class. Give the HOs The Ss write the questions first. Then the Ss practice speaking by asking and answering the questions. T monitor and encourage the Ss to ask some follow up questions by using the past simple. Correct if necessary.
