Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about identical twins in the context of research done on their backgrounds and genes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary to describe life events and positive characteristics of people in the context of their lives, choices and family set-up.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show some family pictures of myself and share with the students about my family, my brother, grandmother and my background.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

To set the scene students will work in pairs and complete exercise 1 of the textbook, where they discuss whether they have any siblings, and whom they take after in their family. They can then share two facts about their partner with the rest of the class.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students to complete exercise 3 (a gist reading exercise) where they read over the text quickly and identify which twins are referred to in each given statement. Students then give whole class feedback and teacher provides the appropriate answer key.

While-Reading #2 - Vocabulary (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students work together in pairs to complete exercise 4 from the textbook, where they match the correct research finding with a specific word given. Whole class feedback is then given at the end of the activity and teacher presents the answer key.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

This will be a small group discussion where students read a summary of facts about the Jim Twins and give their opinions.
