Description

In this lesson we will focus on reading and lexis. Students will gist read a text about staying healthy longer. They will work in partners and decide which 3 tips mentioned in handout 1 are the best for living longer. Then they will read the article once again and this time they are scanning to find out which tips in the first exercise were mentioned in the text. Then they will complete the lexis task which is to fill in the blanks in Lexis 1, a-e. As they complete the task, I will write the sentences on the board and later have volunteers come and fill in the blanks. The students will do Anecdote 2 at the end of the class in pairs. They will discuss what that person they chose did to stay healthy and fit with the rest of the class.

Main Aims

  • The main aim is reading.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The susidiary aim is lexis.

Procedure

Lifestyle (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

The teacher will put some pictures on the whiteboard and shortly discuss with them about the pictures. All of the pictures are related to the text and the context. One picture is related to a word from the text (gate-ball) which the students would otherwise have trouble with. Once the topic has been defined we will go on to the task.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Task 1 will have the students pair up. They will answer the questions according to their own opinions. Their handout will be folded and they are not to unfold it until the next task. The teacher will write the letters a-f on the board and have volunteers come up to write the correct word/words. The teacher will go over and correct this.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and a specific information reading task

Task 2 is to read the text. Now the students unfold their paper and read, looking for the answers in task 1. The teacher needs to remind the students about the meaning of gate-ball and show them where it is found in the text. The other vocab words will also need to be taught right now. Then they start the task, they are to work individually. After 10 minutes the teacher asks for students' answers and gives the correct answer finally, which is 'all of them'.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In task 3 students are to work individually and the first person to finish this task is the winner. The teacher must first explain the meaning of extended family before this handout is given by referring to it in the text.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Task 4 the students are to do the part called 'Anecdote' with a partner. They will discuss about the healthiest person they know and what that person does to stay healthy. At the end of the task the teacher will ask the students to share what they came up with, specifically what the most important aspect to being healthy is in their opinion.
