In this lesson students do a reading in the form of a review. The language they focus are the elements required to mention to write a review. Afterwards, there is a gap fill to highlight these elements. Finally, they are going to write about a popular series popular in their country.

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a review in the context of TV shows

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about a TV drama in the context of Popular TV shows


Stage 1 (3-5 minutes) • Lead-in

Put a few posters of Turkish series on thr board. Ask: what are they? TV shows Get students into pairs, ask them: ' How do you select an interesting show to watch if you don't know anything about them?' ' What are the ways to find the interesting ones?' Elicit: 'review' a written opinion about a TV show, book, film in a mafazine.

Stage 2 (1-2 minutes) • Read for the gist, scan, read for details

T gives Ss the reading handout to read for gist: Is the review mainly positive or negative? Positive

Stage 3 (2-3 minutes) • Put the topics in order based on the text

Students read the text again to put the topics in the order of appearance in the text, students check in pairs and then with the teacher

Stage 4 (4-5 minutes) • Reading for details

T gives Ss a set of true/false sentences to read the again

Stage 5 (5-6 minutes) • Post reading

T gives Ss a set of questions related to the text they just read and they talk about it. *Are there any Turkish series you like very much? *What are they called? *What is the story line? *What do you like about them? *What don’t you enjoy about then? *Do you recommend them? Why/why not?

Stage 6 (2-4 minutes) • Lead-in

Ask Ss 'what is office life?'

Stage 7 (3-4 minutes) • To familiarize students with the TV series they are going to read about in their writing model

Students watch a short clip about thd series ' the office' and answer a gist question: 'does the man like his colleagues to play joke on at workplace?' No

Stage 8 (3-4 minutes) • To read the language focus handout about what they just saw

T tells the class this is a famous TV show in Brirain. T gives Ss language focus handout, they read it quickly: 'what does the wrirer think of this series?' Is it pisitive or negative? Positive T asks students to read the text again to predict what they could place in the gaps, first individually then in oairs they compare

Stage 8 (3-4 minutes) • Fill in the gaps with options provided

T asks students to match the options on top of the text to blank spaces.

Stage 9 (3-4 minutes) • To do fast writing

Teacher asks the students to think about their favorite TV show and write continuously about things that they remember about the show.

Stage 10 (4-5 minutes) • To complete the sentence frames

Students go back to sentences in exe. 1 in language focus handout and complete the sentences so they are true for a TV series they know.

Stage 11 (5 minutes) • Write a review

Teacher asks students to write a complete model just like the one in lang. focus handout based on these highlighted elements: * plot(storyline) * setting * characters * why popular?
