Description

In this lesson, students will use some vocabulary about natural events through a guided discovery based on listening for gist and for details to a recording from two speakers talking about their life experiences. The second half of the lesson, the students will have a grammar practice focus on the narrative verb forms.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of narrative verb forms in the context of the power of nature. (Narrative Tenses; Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect.)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about power of nature
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a story telling using narrative tenses
  • To provide product writing practice of a narrative tenses in the context of natural disaster

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Play a short video footage from YouTube of the natural events. Encourage Ss to discuss in open class by describing the pictures in 2 minutes and elicit today's topic - The power of nature. Monitor aside.

Exposure (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss read the question 3 from HO2. Play rec 1.36. (Fran’s Story) Give them a minute to discuss with their partners before re-playing the recording and let Ss compare their answers. (Peer checking) FB - W/C check the answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Focus on meaning. Illustrate the correlation between three forms with the timeline (PPT).

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Eliciting form with Ss Work on drilling and pronunciation of the TL

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss match the examples from the stories with their uses (HO3). Peer checking. Monitor and pay attention to Ss and see if they understand. FB - W/C - check answers. Focus on form. Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ask Ss to write a brief story about their own experiences using a gap fill handout I created. They will be guided with their writing with the questions given on the handout. They can write what they like as long as they build it around the target language. If they don't have a story they can make something up. Monitor closely and write mistakes on side board. Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Put Ss into groups and have each group sort and analyze their stories. Then discuss which story they think would be best to make a great story on behalf of their group. Have each group share their best story with class.
