In this lesson we will revise grammar, present perfect simple and continuous. Our context, given in the previous lessons, is about Ibiza and we focus on a DJ and tourist to introduce the two concepts.

Main Aims

  • Review and practice present perfect simple and continuous grammar using the context set in the previous classes about a DJ and tourists in Ibiza

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in asking questions using TL
  • Give the Ss exercises for semi-controlled practice and make sure they´re using the TL correctly.


Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text / basic sentences.

T Projects the sentences. T-S very quickly complete the blanks with me 1 min. Ss will read the sentences and fill in the blanks with very basic information, very simple and at the same time, connect with the sentences, read the sentences, getting familiar with the ideas of the past and present and the last sentences in present perfect simple and continuous. WCFB [S-WB] Remember the Ss been and coming are the main verb to help them with the next ex.

Guided Discovery (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the target language

T-S, T chests the material (sentences and questions) now I want you to focus on the 2 sentences on the 3rd column. Discuss PW the questions in ex.2. Alone or in pairs? pairs. 1 or 2 min? 10m. At this stage, Ss will read more carefully the statements in the 3rd column, and will discuss with their peer to find the answers to the questions in the ex2 which will lead them into the meaning, use and the difference between present perfect simple and continuous. WCFB [S-T] [S-WB] With the 2 sentences on the WB, correct the exercise, form, WB write the question form as well.

Pronunciation Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the pronunciation of the target language

Here, T will, using the examples on the WB, clarify pronunciation, using the techniques described in the Language Analysis table. Ss will be involved at every stage with the drilling techniques and getting more confident to use this grammar as will be their task in the next step.

Controlled Practice (13-17 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T-S, Instructions ex.3, demo WB. Do we do alone or pairs? alone. 5m. Ss will be really focused on the task, writing their names for the facts asked and writing their own sentences using the grammar and structure we just saw. Answer key for ex1 on the WB. Monitor, check which errors are common, or where they most needed help. 1st check PW, get them to exchange their sentences and correct each other. give them 5 min. If needed explain why live, work and study may be both. "I've studied English all my life" "I've been studying English since August"

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T-S, choose one ´fact´ from the previous ex. eg. Buying, going, have... ask around to find the person that has done or has been doing "it" the longest. demo the question. Do I ask only one person? no. Do I need to ask everyone? no. Do we sit in our groups or walk around? walk. Ss will be walking around asking their questions and getting more practice with the grammar we reviewed today. WCFB [S-T, call out examples] and possible corrections that you've listened to.
