Upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will practice reading introduced in an article about "The Dangers Of Hero Worship". They will go through many tasks about the article. They will also practice speaking through pair work and group work activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, skimming and scanning reading practice using a text about The dangers of hero worship in the context of celebrity heroes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a pair work and interviews in the context of famous stars and how students feel about them anou

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students to the topic of celebrity heroes.

Say good morning to the students. Ask them to write their names in cards and stick them in their shirts. Ask them if they watch TV programs, see movies or listen to music. Listen to their answers

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide the context of popular stars in pair work speaking practice

Put students in pairs. Show them the handout. Tell them that they are going to discuss these questions in their pairs. Tell them they have about 3 minutes to do it. Ask some partners who does your partner think the most popular star in the country.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language. To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show students the handouts. Tell them they are going to interview different students and ask them the questions they have in the interview. Tell them they have 5 minutes to finish. Give them the handouts. Monitor while they are having the activity and provide help when needed. Stop them when I have about 3 have filled all the interview patterns.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task.

Show students the article and the tasks handout. Tell them they are going to read individually. Tell them to read the different titles they have in exercise 1. Tell them to choose the best title for the article. Tell them they have 8 minutes to finish. Tell them they can decide about the title with a partner or a small group. Ask them after they finish what is the best title.

While-Reading (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task.

Tell students they are going to read the article again. Tell them to put the paragraphs of the article in the correct order. Tell them they have 5 minutes to finish. Tell them they can work with a partner or small group to order them. Monitor and help while they are working. Take the whole class feed back after they finish. Write the correct order on the board.

Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To get the students to guess the meanings of some words through the context

Show students the task. Put them in different pairs. Tell them to read the words and the meanings in the task. Tell them to go back to the text to match the meanings with the highlighted words. Give them 3 minutes to finish. Give them the answer sheets after they finished.
