Description

In this lesson,students will develop their reading skills with both having gist reading first and then detailed reading for specific information. Furthermore,students will learn about some new vocabulary in the text and have a chance to review it with different examples and activities throughout the lesson.Students will see some photos of people from different countries first and before they are given the texts to read,they will guess who these people are,where they come from,whether they have a brother or a sister by the help of the teacher.After they are given the texts,they will have a gist reading pair by pair first for 2 minutes and try to get the right answers from the text by scanning special words or sentences as clues. Then they will match the texts with the right person on WB and then try to answer the teacher's basic questions about the people in the texts.After this,they will have a detailed reading for 3-4 minutes for re-checking their understanding about the texts but also they are given a task about finding new vocabulary and estimate and tell each other in PW/GW what they mean at this time. Later,they will be allowed to tell their own ideas about the new vocab. and review the real meanings within some illustrations and dramatization by the teacher. And then students will be led with CCQ by the teacher (True-False Activity) during post-reading period.Finally they will get some writing activity to complete the sentences about their own countries by using new vocab.they have learnt in the lesson.

  • To provide review and practice new vocabulary related to the text to describe relationships between people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To engage students by showing some photos about the reading texts to let them understand what to do step by step later on.

T will stick some photos of people from different countries related to the context of the reading texts on WB that students will read later on to let them be engaged at first and allow them to estimate who these people are and the other characteristics of their family,etc.and discuss this matter among them and with the teacher by asking questions and trying to make sentences as production.(S-S,T-S,S-T)

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible and make them be ready for gist reading

Students will be provided to pay attention on photos of people again on WB and will have some meaty activities within the teacher to recognize what the texts will be about such as matching the right flags with the right countries and after learning who is from where with their estimation,they will be led to find out the right enlarged photocopied reading texts and match them with the right people on WB.(T will work with 3 or 4 students during this session but also have the WC help their friends at this moment.)After then,students are given clear and simple instructions to have gist reading.

Gist Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide students look and read the texts not in detail for any specific information by giving clear and simple instructions

Students will be given reading texts handouts and invited for a gist reading for an overview about the texts for 3-5 minutes with clear and simple instructions.After then T starts to ask some basic questions about the texts and they are led to work in pairs again to think and give the right answers and also given a chance to ask some questions and give answers to each other.(T-S,S-T,S-S) Then,students will be invited to circle the correct number on the table in the handout working in pairs and discussing if it's right or wrong with their partners and the teacher later on.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Students will have some meaty activities about the questions and answers about the texts for a review within their teacher and later T will highlight some new vocabulary in the texts one by one by underlying and make the students read the texts again in pair work to recognize the new vocab.and guess what they mean,discussing with each other. After taking feedback from the students,teacher explains the real meanings of the new vocabulary dramatizing,using gestures and mimes and some visual materials. After then, students will decide whether the sentence patterns on the handout about the texts are true or false as an other activity about comprehension of the texts one more time. They are led to work in pairs again.

Post-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned throughout the texts by producing up their own opinions about their own culture within writing.

Students will be provided filling the gaps activity on the HOs by getting clues looking at the HOs again and producing up their own sentences within the words they have learnt in the lesson and after then they are led to check each other in pairs and after then they stand up,mingle around the classroom,get in pairs and tell about their own sentences including their family and culture.
