Description

In this lesson, students will read a text about the future technology. First, they discuss how often they interact with modern devices. This is followed by a pair work, in which students discuss the importance of some devices. Then, they will skim the text and share their understandings. And afterwards, they read in details to answer the question. Finally, there would be a class discussion on the topic of advantages and disadvantages of technology.

Procedure

Warmer (2-4 minutes) • To engage students into the topic

I ask the students how often they use electronic devices and how their technology helps them in general, to have a better life.

Lead in (5-8 minutes) • To establish the context for the lesson

I put some photos of different devices on the board and elicit their names. Students work in pairs, talking about the function of each device. In the end, they put the items in order of importance. In the end,they read their list for the whole class. I'll encourage them to justify their reasons.

Reading for gist (5-7 minutes) • To develop students' skill of reading for gist

Students are given 1 minute to make a list of all the usages of mobile phone, by writing down as many items as they can. They will read their lists in pairs in order to have one list, before reading it to the class. Then, students will be given the hand-outs. They have 2 minutes to skim the reading. After that they discuss their understandings in pairs, before choosing the best title. In the end, they check with the whole class.

Reading for detail (10-13 minutes) • To develop student's scanning skill

Students will work individually to answer questions in exercises a, b and c. Then they will check their answer in pairs, before checking with the whole class.

Post-Reading (5-9 minutes) • Follow-up speaking practice

Students work in pairs and say their opinion about how useful the changes mentioned in the text would be. (1 = not useful, 5 = very useful). Then they check with the whole class. In the end, I ask some questions which would lead to a discussion about advantages and disadvantages of technology. If the students have no idea about disadvantages, I'll try to help.
