Description

In this lesson Ss will learn about vocabulary on symptoms and practice speaking about them. Next, they will match some sentences with three related situations.They will also reoder and read some jumbled sentences into a few doctor-patient jokes. Afterwards, they practice saying the roles in pairs using their own examples. Finally, Ss will end the lesson with three role plays between a doctor and patient.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in different role plays in the context of Illnesses

Subsidiary Aims

  • To raise awareness of functional language used in various contexts to explain/describe symptoms & illnesses, give advice & show sympathy. To review & practice illness related vocabulary.

Procedure

Warmer/lead-in (4-6 minutes) • Engagement & setting the illness context related

T gives Ss a set of cut-up "doctor,doctor" jokes. T gets Ss to match the patient-doctor dialogues to make the jokes.

Pre-Speaking (5-8 minutes) • To distinguish different situations in terms of illnesses

Give the Ss exe.3 from student's book. They work in pairs to match the sentences with the situation. Ss peer check & T provides the As on the board.

Pre-Speaking #2 (10-13 minutes) • To practice the language when people talk about illnesses in different situations

Get Ss to work in pairs to reorder the mini-dialogues. They check with other pairs and then take WC feedback. Drill some of the sentences. Ss in pairs practice the dialogue. S1 look at the sentences and S2 has to try to recall the dialogue. Ss try to replace lines of the dialogue with their own example s or sentences from Speaking exe. 1

Pre-Speaking #3 (3-6 minutes) • To prepare Ss for a role-play

Divide the Ss into As & Bs - Give As the situations from student's book page 142 & Bs from page 146. Give Ss time to read the situations & think about what they can say & check they understand the task- they can discuss this with their pairs

Role play (6-10 minutes) • To speak about illnesses & give advice & show sympathy

Get Ss into concentric circles - As on the inner circlefacing out & Bs outside facing a student on the outside. Ss must look at roleplay 1 only. Give them a sig al, they should get into this role play. Give Ss afew mins for this & give another signal, the outer circle (the Bs) should move round one person - clockwise. They should then repeat roleplay 1 with their new partner. Give another signal, Bs move again - Ss move onto roleplay 2. Again let them do it twice & then repeat with roleplay 3. While Ss are talking, monitor & try to get some notes of lang. used especially errors related to the topic.

Post-Speaking (3-5 minutes) • To take feedback from students

Get Ss to sit down & take some feed back * which doctor / chemist gave the best advice? * Which boss was the most symoathetic? * Which doctor was helpful? * Which employee was the most run down to call in sick? * Which boss was the angriest when called in sick? * Which chemist was the most careful to record your informayion?
