Main Aims

  • To give Students practice in writing descriptions of places in the context of "Magical Places" implementing impersonal passives(distancing).

Subsidiary Aims

  • To extend Students awareness of distancing phrases and give them the opportunity to practise them and the descriptive language.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To engage the students

I will ask the students :"Do you like travelling? What is the place you want to visit? Which place you can call magical? I will show the students the picture of one of the magic places i know and than i'll ask them to tell me what adjectives (e.g. beautiful, astonishing, breath-taking,etc...) comes to their mind first. After they name some adjectives,i'm going to write them down. i'm going to tell them about that place on the picture using new grammar (impersonal passive).

Review and Clarification (5-9 minutes) • To clarify the meaning

I will refer to the text on pg.45 of the textbook and ask students to underline the TL .I will remind students that "It is said that..." construction is used when a writer wants to distance himself/herself from the comments..I will encourage the Students to discuss in pairs more about magical places they have visited or know of, i will ask them to make notes on what they've discussed using appropriate grammar.

Semi-Controlled Pratice (5-8 minutes) • To encourage the students to plan and draft

Tell the Students that they are going to write a short text for a tourism fair about a place with magical powers or a legend they know. I will ask them to plan what they are going to write about. I will tell them that they can use texts from the text book as a pattern for their writing. After they have finished i'll ask them to swap the sheets with their partners and check each other.

Productive Task (10-15 minutes) • To make the students write a short text

After the Students get their works back I'll ask them to write down again what they've created. While they are writing I'm going to do monitoring.

Follow up/Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To correct students mistakes and lead lesson to a logical end

As the Students finished,i'm going to ask them to put their writing on the white board and ask everyone to read, correct any mistakes and put a 'plus' or a 'heart' on a paper. Then calculate the pluses/hearts to see whose writing was the best and the most interesting.
