Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a article in the context of favorite days

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about a university student's favorite day in the context of daily routines

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask the students what their favorite day is and why? I will choose one student from the women's group and one from the men's. If anybody blurts out something interesting and is willing to talk about it, I may allow for more responses.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

I will tell the students that they will be reading about Cristina and her favorite day. Cristina is a college student who lives in Madrid, Spain. I will write down 'Is Cristina's Saturday like yours?' on the board. Then, I will try to get some answers from the class. A student who responds with a no, will be asked to elaborate on why not' and similarly a student who responds with a yes will be asked to explain why. I will tell the students to read the text and compare their Saturday with hers. Students work individually. I will nominate another student to tell the class whose guess was right.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I show a yellow highlighter to the students and try to elicit the phrase 'highlighted words'. I will write the highlighted words from the text on the board. I will tell the students to read the text again and check that they understand these words. I will give a handout which requires them to complete some sentences using the highlighted words. Students work in pairs for this task. Whole class feedback follows.

Productive Task (15-17 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will tell the students that they will be writing an article for the university magazine Yaşama Sanatı. They are supposed to work in pairs and write four paragraphs about a person teaching at the university. I will give out a card with 4 questions on it. At first they make notes of what can say in order to answer these questions. Then, they write their article. I remind them to use some of the highlighted words to link together their ideas.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

As the students are working on their article, I will closely monitor and take notes. I will provide feedback on board using my notes.
