Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about dinner date in the context of social activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation and planning in the context of social activities

Procedure

Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Show slide 1 on the w/b with pictures of dinner parties - ask Ss the following question: do you see the pictures? what do all these pictures have in common? - wait for feed back from Ss nominate two or three maximum and elicit the word occasion if you Ss didn't say the word just ask: do you think there are special occasions in these pictures? - explain the word occasion if necessary and ask for examples of special occasions - Tell Ss the following: Now I want you to think about a special occasion you've been invited to could be a birthday party, wedding, or maybe just a dinner with friends - after you think about an occasion (show slide 2) and the HO1 ask these questions to your partner - ask Ss what are you going to do to check understanding - Give HO1 - set time limit 3 minutes - monitor and Help where needed - get W/C feedback ask Ss Tell me about your partner's occasion

Pre-teach Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • to enable Ss to further understand the listening text

- Tell Ss we are going to study some Vocabulary - show slide 3 on the w/b and ask Ss about the first picture - elicit the word from the Ss and ask them about the word combination - look at how the word is pronounced model and drill - go through the rest of the pictures on the chart the same way - move on to pre-listening activity

Pre-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- show slide 10 on the w/b - ask Ss what do you think this is? is it a special occasion? - wait for some answers and then ask Ss to pair up and and think talk about about the story from the pictures - set time limit 2 minutes - get feed back as w/c and nominate some students to tell the story three is enough

While-/Listening #1 (16-18 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- Tell Ss we are going to listen to three tracks - put Ss in three groups - Tell Ss there are some differences between the tracks and the pictures - Tell Ss to listen and work together in their groups and choose one person from the group to come to the bard and tell the differences - play the first track and then give Ss one minute to discuss in their group and choose one group to tell the answers - repeat this procedure for every track - deal with any questions and move on to the next activity

While-Listening #2 (8-9 minutes) • to provide Ss with a detailed listening task

- ask Ss if they still remember the listening tracks - show slide 11 and HO2 and tell Ss these are some sentences about the listening track - in groups you will decide if these sentences are true or false - put Ss in groups and set time limit 2 minutes - after Ss finish play the listening track again and tell them to check their answers in pairs

Free activity (5-6 minutes) • to provide Ss with the opportunity to practice speaking for fluency

- Tell Ss you will do some speaking practice - Tell Ss imagine if you have a guest as a new friend what do turkish people normally do ? think about if you're going to cook or order food?, what kind of food is it? what other preparations you will do? - put Ss in pairs and set time limit 2 minutes - have feedback as w/c
