Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for accuracy & fluency in the context of typical friends and free-time activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give the Ss controlled & semi-controlled practice of simple present yes/no questions. To consolidate & give Ss the opportunity to practice free time vocabulary.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss pictures. Elicit vocab. Mime game to check. Ss put picture on wall and write lexis.

Semi-controlled speaking practice (10-11 minutes) • To provide a model of language to use for speaking and to provide a semi controlled speaking practice

Write 2 examples on WB, What's my name? Cait "play football", "listen to music" ... I play football ..? Tick or Cross. Elicit my answer from Ss. Ss complete me column. 1 minute. When Ss have finished me column, T demos an interview (Partner 1 column) with strong S for the following activity. Ss complete an interview with a partner forming questions and completing questionnaire. Ss move into pairs and complete Partner 1. Demo new partner activity. "Who was your partner?" Change partners and ask about who their new partner interviewed. Use WB to demo. Write TL (present simple questions) on board, "Does Ayse drink beer?" Complete questions with new partners. "Does Deniz play football?" Yes she does. Ss change to a 3rd partner and ask each other questions about previous partner, e.g. "Does Mario have a dog?" , "No, he doesn't." Instruct Ss this is speaking activity and they are not writing. Monitor and help where needed. FB taken through Partner 3 activity.

Extension Activity (13-15 minutes) • To give Ss extended practice speaking using language from completed questionnaire

Tell Ss they are going to write a profile about their partner. Demo with profile on board about Bethan. She speaks Turkish. She has a dog. She doesn't live in a house."Who is it? Bethan. Instruct Ss to write the profile using the information about somebody from the questionnaire. Collect papers. Pin to walls. Ss go around and read, guessing who it is an writing name at bottom on paper. Read off papers. "Is that you, Ayse?"

Free Speaking Activity (free time/friends) Exercises 1-2 (5-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice learned vocabulary in typical friends lesson as well as present simple questions and short answers within the typical friends lesson content

Write on the board - "eat at restaurants", "have a coffee", "travel", "play sports". Ask Ss, What are these things? These are things I do with friends. What do you do with friends? T tells Ss to complete exercise 1 by asking each other the question, "What do you do with friends?" and using words and phrases listed as the answers. When Ss are finished with Exercise 1, ask one S, "Deniz, what do you do you your friends?" S: answers. Write S's answers on WB. Elicit from Ss how we can make this a question. T instructs Ss to make full questions out of words and phrases in exercise 1. Instruct Ss to use full questions when interviewing partner. T monitors for FB

Feedback and Error Correction (7-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

After monitoring Exercise 1 and 2 on errors Ss make, write a list of 10 to 12 true and untrue sentences on the board. Elicit corrections from Ss. T corrects first sentence on WB. Ss who answer correction come up to WB and correct the following sentences.

Final Speaking Activity (3-5 minutes) • To give Ss chance to implement speech corrections and extra practice in speaking activity

Ask one S if they are a typical woman friend or typical man friend. T and S demo the question and why answer. T puts Ss into pairs and Ss discuss this question.
