Land & Sea - Listening
Intermediate level


In this lesson students will listen to a true news story containing vocabulary they used to write a story in the previous lesson. They will work on both receptive (listening and reading) and productive(speaking) skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practise for the gist and other specific information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy in speaking and reading.
  • Reading/Speaking - To provide fluency and accuaracy in both the recptive and productive skills.


Stage 1 - Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and create interest.

- Get students to refer back to the news story they had written in there groups in the previous lesson. Brainstorm to see if they can remember the words they were given to use in their story and put words on WB.

Satge 2 (ex 2) (8-10 minutes) • To give students a gist task for the listening activity.

Tell students that they are now going to listen to a news story which contains all the words they used in their own story,(words on the WB). Advise students that the news story is based on a true incident. Ask them to listen out for the words from the exercise from the previous lesson and put the words in the order they appear. Pause the audio after the second word that appears to make sure students have got it noted. Get FB from students to confirm order of words. Play audio again to confirm the correct order of the words.

Satge 3 (ex 3 and 1) (8-10 minutes) • Students to sit in pairs and re tell story using the vocabulary learnt.(using the productive skill)

Ask the students to sit in pairs and re tell the story they just listened to using the vocabulary used in the previous exercise and see how similar it was to there story.

Stage 4(ex 4) (10-15 minutes) • To get students to use both recptive and productive skills

Give each student a number from 1-4 and ask them to sit in their groups. Hand out the audio text and ask students to read it individually. Once they have read the text ask students to nominate a person in their group to be the secretary. Give out hand out for ex 4 and students to discuss and answer the questions in their groups

Stage 5 - ex 5 (3-5 minutes) • Find specific details by scanning audio text.

Hand out for exercise 5. Ask students to look at the examples on the hand outs and then to look at the audio text in their groups and find other examples. Allow students a few minutes then get class FB
