In this lesson Ss are going to read and talk about magical places around the world. There will be scanning and skimming activities. They will learn how to produce impersonal passives sentences. finally they are supposed to write a short paragraph about the magical places and try to use the grammar in their language .

Main Aims

  • To review and extend Ss' awareness of impersonal passives (distancing) and give controlled practice in the context of magical places.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To prepare Ss' for the writing task.

Procedure

warmer (7-10 minutes) • to engage the students

I will tell a fake scary story about a magic place and try to use TL as much as I can to introduce the grammar, then for 2 or 3 minutes ask Ss if they know a story like mine. Then I will pair up Ss and ask them to go back to reading part and find all rumors,beliefs..

clarification (10-15 minutes) • To familiarize students with the grammar

When Ss have found them I will ask for one or two sentences and I will write them on the board. Elicit :How sure are we that this is true? is this information true? Does the person who said this want people think that it was him? Does the person try to distance him/her from this fact? I may have eliciting on a piece of paper. Then I will explain the form by asking the Ss how we can form the sentence? it +is+ pp+ that... is it in the past? is it an active sentence or passive sentence?

Controlled practice (10-15 minutes) • To have more practice on the grammar points.

There are 2 controlled practices in the book on page 44. I will give the Ss exercise 1 first and then 2. There might not be enough time to do the both activities. If It happens I will skip number 2.

Freer practice (15-20 minutes) • To make Ss use the grammar more

I will divide the class into two groups A and B in my mind. I have two different pictures.I will hand one picture to group A and the other one to group B. I will pair them and give each pair a picture. Then ask them to work in pairs and make up a fake story about the pictures and try to use TL. When It is done I will group one pair of A and one from B to share their ideas and opinions.
