The way we live. Present Tenses
Pre-intermediate. Grade 9 level

Description

In this lesson students learn about the present tenses through guided discovery based on a reading text about living in the USA. The lesson starts with a discussion about USA. This is followed by writing the first five things sts thing of about USA. This is followed by reading the Article in 3 groups. Finally there's a controlled practice through the reading text and a free practice via final speaking activity.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of the way we live

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I show students three persons, then I ask them if they knew any of them,after that I ask them to give the persons a name,an age, a job and a place where they are from, I ask some questions about the characters and tell students about their real names .

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I choose some sentences from each text and write them on the board asking students to think about the theme and the context they going to deal with. I give students time ti read and think about meanings. students are asked what words they might find in the text reading , i write some of their production on the board.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I stick the three texts on the walls of the class, then I divide the class into three groups asking each group to go and read about one of the three persons. I write down some questions on the board then I make a model question giving students to do the same in pairs I write down some initials on the board getting students to scan the text to practice the receptive skill of reading.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I give students some hints while practising the receptive skill of reading to find out at least three words they know and teach them to their mates. students are asked to find scan the text to find out whether these persons are happy their in USA or not,what they like there, and what are their jobs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

students are asked to choose some one they know and write a simple e.mail, letter or a whatsapp message about their opinion about life in USA and whether they like it or not Then I ask those who finish to read theirs, after they finish, I ask them to make a writing gallery sticking their writings on the walls and take turns to read them.
