Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide controlled speaking practice in the context of national food.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

set context and activate schemata. T will elicit examples of famous national dishes using pictures. In this activity, ss will walk around the room and match the picture of the national dish with the correct country it belongs to. Ss will focus their attention on the photographs. students will work individually. Ex. pizza from Italy, Paella from Spain. (Arab dishes have been added to motivate ss) Pronunciation and phonetic form will be displayed on the board for some of the dishes such as paella. T-S feedback at the end of the activity.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

SS will now focus on the HO. Activity 1. ss will work in pairs and will look at the four dishes (Bruschetta, Bife de chorizo, Sachertorte, and full English breakfast) on the page and decide which dish belongs to which of these four countries. (Italy, Argentina, England, Austria.) ICQs given after instructions to determine ss comprehension. End of the activity, answers will be written on the WB. Then T will ask ss -Which dish is your favorite? and Why? Next Activity 2_ pre teach the following words- toast, tomatoes chilli, onions, egg, bacon, chocolate, beef, sausage. SS must identify these items in the pictures. SS will work in groups.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with specific information reading/listening tasks

In activity 3- ss will receive a HO and will listen to an audio recording of the four people in the photographs talking about their national dish. The first time they hear the audio they will only identify 2 things. 1) identify each persons nationality 2) match each speaker to the correct dish on the HO. I will play the recording once and then check answers. Next i will play the recording again; but this time ss must listen to what each speaker says about their dish. SS will take notes and share their information in groups. SS will then discuss if they have tried or would like to try any of the dishes and why? Answers will be written on the WB.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In activity 4, SS will work in pairs and try to answer as many questions as they can about the people in exercise 3. If necessary i will play the recording again to let ss complete their answers. I will demonstrate the first two examples so ss can have a better understanding of the task. using ICQ's to reinforce this. At the end of the activity, answer sheet 1 will be given to each of the groups.

Post-listening/speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In this speaking activity, I will give examples of my own favorite national dish from Yemen and from the USA. I will proceed to elicit one or two other examples from the class and then get the ss to talk in pairs about their national foods. What are your favorite national foods? When and where do you eat them? SS will describe them to a partner. T will get class feedback. T will establish what type of dishes are most popular with the class. For example breakfast, lunch, dinner, sweets/cakes, snacks.
