Description

In this lesson, the students are going to listen to a radio programme during which an online shopping website is being introduced. They are going to be introduced to certain vocabulary that are essential for while-listening activities. In addition, the students are going to be asked to do a small survey in the class with questions on shopping styles/habits.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about online shopping website in the context of "presents that were bought for exes."

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide spoken practice in the context of shopping habits/styles.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to remind the students that they talked on "shopping" in the previous lesson. I am going to get them to think about their own shopping experiences. Then they are going to be asked to think about online shopping.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I am going to ask the students to think about what they buy as presents for their loved ones. After getting them to think about this, I am plannig to pre-teach the voccabulary that they are going to need for while-listening task: present (n.), jewellery (n.), ticket (n), painting (n.), engagement ring (n.), break up (v.), ex (n.)

While-Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I am going to provide the students with a short description of the website (neverlikeditanyway.com) and ask them to think about "what they could buy from that website." After that, they are going to listen to the radio programme and try to understand the things that can be bought from the website.

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I am going to provide the students with a set of questions that they will have to answer based on the information from the radio programme.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I am going to ask the students to imagine that they come acrodd a survey conductor in a shopping mall. They are going to listen to a woman who asks certain questions. The students are going to try to write down the exact questions that they hear. Then, the students are going to be asked to kind of a mini-survey in the class with the additional questions to the ones they have written down.
