Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about famous inventors in the context of inventions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of inventions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

start the lesson by trying to elicit the topic from the ss and activating schemata. I have an idea. (point to head) i want to make something. ( using hand gestures) Something nobody's ever made before! (Using intonation) I want to make a flying car!.( using intonation) And after i make it I will sell it. (showing a feeling of excitement) I will make a lot of money....( draw a $ sign on the board) everyone will use what i created and it will help make life easier. i have just made an .........(ss will try to guess the word Invention). write invention on board. Give an example of the arab inventor named Muhammed Al khwarizmi who invented algebra in the 9th century. .

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre Teach Vocabulary words. Give meaning and stress. Vocab words- painter, opera, idea, government, windscreen wiper or windshield wiper (American Eng) Using images and eliciting words from students. Writing the words on board with meaning a stress. Pass out Reading HO. Ask ss to look at the text. Pointing out the titles. Who are these people? What did they do? What are the three inventions? Which one is your favorite?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with practice in skim reading identifying key words in the text.

SS will practice skim reading in this activity. They will correct the dates using answer sheet 1. I will demonstrate first example and ask ICQ's to make sure students understand the task.This activity will help ss in improving their reading and error correcting. Students will work individually first then check answers in pairs. activity will end with T-S feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

This activity requires ss to make negative sentences using the sentences given to them on the HO. Then ss must correct the sentences using Answer Sheet 1. Write on the board the first example. Ask questions. Elicit from ss on how to make a negative sentence. and then explain to them how to correct the sentence. leave example on board for ss reference. Handout Answer Sheet 2 to pairs and allow time for ss to self check. SS must then work in groups and make 3 incorrect sentences on their own using the handout. Brief T-S- feedback.

Post-Reading/Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide ss with an opportunity to practice controlled speaking

SS will be given a dialogue handout w a controlled speaking activity. I will demonstrate with one ss first then ask ICQ's to make sure students understand the activity thoroughly. SS will be working in pairs .
