Description

In this lesson, SS will be engaged in a receptive skill development by listening for the gist and specific information related to a conversation between two passengers on a train.Also, SS will be engaged in a grammar structure which will be covered in both listening and speaking activities to contextualize the structure.

Materials

Abc Matching handouts. Copies of pages 26,27 from Straightforward Beginner. Straightforward CD1

Main Aims

  • To provide a specific information in a listening practice from a text that includes vocabulary about countries and nationalities.Also, to clarify and practice a grammar structure.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the grammar structure in the form of listening and speaking activities.

Procedure

Stage1(Lead in) (2-4 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and make the context of the lesson interesting for the SS.

- Ask students a bunch of questions about trains: Do you like trains? Have you traveled by train before? Have you got on a wrong train or bus before?

Stage 2 (4-7 minutes) • Listening for gist

- Tell them we are are going to listen now to the conversation, and while you are listening find the answer to this question - Write the question on the board "What is the problem?" -Pre-teach blocking vocabulary. - Tell them to pair-check before answering the question.

Stage 3 (2-4 minutes) • Feedback

- After they finish pair-checking, I will do a whole class feedback.

Stage 4 (2-3 minutes) • Scan listening

- Tell them we are going to listen again and while you are listening try to find the answer to theses questions. - Give them copies of page 26. - Tell them to pair-check while answering.

Stage 5 (3-5 minutes) • Second feedback

- Do a whole class feedback.

Stage 6 (5-6 minutes) • Present the grammar structure

- Review the positive form of verb to be. - Present the negative form of verb to be.

Stage 7 (6-10 minutes) • Practice the grammar structure

- Give the students copies of page 27 . - Tell them to do exercises 1 and 2 while pair-checking. - Do the first example for them. - Do a whole class feedback.

Stage 8 (4-6 minutes) • For SS to differentiate between the pronunciation of verb to be form in the normal and contracted form

- Drill the pronunciation of the verb to be both in the normal and contracted form. - Do the first example for them to clarify. - Tell SS to listen and tick the sentence that they hear. - Tell them to listen again.
