Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Re-intruduce yourself. Refer to the text they have read and ask "What did the lawyer do after he had given up?" Elicit one Simple Past sentence (He went to south America) and write it on the w/b. Ask Ss what tense this sentence is.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Tell Ss to work in pairs and to find examples of simple past in the text and underline them; to find the examples of present perfect tense and circle them. Get W/C feedback and write one of the present perfect sentences onto the W/B.

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Draw a timeline to clarify the meaning. Ask Ss which verb forms do they use for the past simple and present perfect simple. Analyse the form- eliciting the parts of the sentence&underline them in another colour.

Highlighting (9-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Tell Ss to work in pairs. Give Ss HO1- made from the grammar box- get them match Simple Past&Present Perfect with the definitions. Take w/c feedback. Give Ss the cut-up time expressions and get them to work together to match the time expressions with the appropriate verb form and stick the cut-ups under the pre-prepared headings.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss work together to choose the correct answers. w/c feedback and deal with any questions.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Get Ss to work together to fill in the gaps choosing between Simple Past&Present Perfect. Tell Ss to check their answers against the answer keys on the walls.

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell Ss to interview 3 of their classmates (not the ones at their tables) and make short notes of their answers by using the questions in HO4 (they will have worked on the questions beforehand in HO3). Ss stand up and mingle asking&answering questions. Tell Ss to go back to their tables and compare their answers with the other group members and find sommon common points. w/c feedback.
