Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of conditional Type 3 in the context of school

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of school

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T greets the sts and after that she asks them whether they have ever missed an important occasion (exam, meeting, interview). If they say yes, she asks them to talk to their partner about the event. If they say no, she asks them to talk to their partner what they would do if they missed an important occasion. After that she asks them to share the it with WC.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The T tells a story about a student whomissed an important exam. While telling the story, she uses pictures from PPT so that the sts can guess what happens next. After that she asks sts too tell the story to their partner again.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

She highligts the target language "If John had gone to bed earlier, he would have passed the course". She uses her fingers and asks sts to repaet after her.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

She asks CCQs to clarify the meaning. 1. Are we talking about the past or present? 2. Did he go to bed early? 3. did he pass the course? 4. Is it real or unreal? After that she elicits the form and drill pronunciation and stress with the help of pictures. she shows pictures and leads the sts to drill the sentences. 1. If she had gone to bed earlier, he would have passed 2. If she had gone to bed earlier, he would have taken the exam. 3. If she had gone to bed earlier, he would have woken up earlier. 4. If she had gone to bed earlier, he would have caught the bus. Later she elicits the neagtive version -If he hadn't gone to bed late, he would/could have taken the exam. -If he had gone to bed earlier, he wouldn't have missed the exam.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

After that the T gives scrambled sentences and asks sts to unscramble them. Later the sts check the answers with their pairs and then the T gives the answer key.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The T gives a rewrite worksheet (Appendix 1) to the sts. They do it indiviudally and check their answers with their pair. After that the T gives WF.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The T gives a worksheet (appendix 2) to the sts. This time she asks them to think how diffrent thier life would have been and complete the sentences with their own sentences. The sts share their answers with their group members. After that the T asks sts to share their groups member's answer with whole class.
