Main Aims

  • In this lesson ss practise functional language with controlled speaking in the context of giving and receiving directions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise listening for specific information

Procedure

Stage 1 - Warmer or lead in session (10 minutes) • To set the context

Some pictures of different types of local places will be stuck around the classroom - a chemist, a newsagent, swimming pool, etc Give vocabulary cards to ss. - give instructions to match them as quickly as possible. Check meaning and pronunciation of problem vocabulary only.

Stage 2 (10 minutes) • To practise listening for specific information

Take measures to demonstrate the exercise very carefully. Do the first one for the whole class. Play the audio track. Allow them to continue. Allow ss to check in pairs. Don't tell them if they are right or wrong. Play the audio again and let them check again. Allow students to complete the next two gap fills.

stage 3 (15 minutes) • To practice controlled speaking

Ex -3. Give instructions to change pairs and practise speaking ex.2 with their new pair. Don't forget ICQs. Ss practise in pairs. Pre -teach directions - near here, over there, on the corner, on the right/left, straight ahead Do this in a kinaesthetic way with ss moving around. Demonstrate pair work for Ex 4 very carefully.

Stage 4 (10 minutes) • To practice functional language with controlled speaking

Demonstrate Ex 5- Teach them how to ask questions to find their way to the chemist's/ baker's... " Is there a chemist's near here? How far is it from the Baker's...What about a bank/ a post office? Students have to talk about where they are and find directions to various places using the map and the key words. Monitor and take notes for error correction. Error correction and goodbye.
