Description

People changing their lives through travel provides the context for introducing students to the present perfect continuous (with for and since). They listen to a woman who took a year off to travel with her husband to Lebanon and answer questions. The answers are discussed. In the next task, T plays the extracts from the interview and asks SS to complete the questions using action verbs with continuous repeated actions which is still happening. T explains present perfect continuous with timelines. The students will practice the language with an exercise at the end of the lesson.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead In (2-3 minutes) • To set session context and engage students

Ask the following questions: If you could spend a year working or studying in another country, which country would you choose ? Why? What would you like to do there? What problems do you think you might have ? T demonstrates and asks SS to work discuss in pairs

Activate Schemata (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening task and generate further interest in the topic.

Distribute pictures and ask SS to describe what they can see in the photos. SS to discuss in groups. Feedback from each group

While Listening (5-6 minutes) • Candidates practice listening in detail and answering questions

T distributes the questions and asks SS to have a look at the questions before they listen to the audio T plays the audio SS listen to the audio and answer questions individually. Discuss in groups Feedback from each group

Introduction to grammar - present perfect continuous (8-9 minutes) • To help SS understand the usage of for/since in the context of present perfect continuos

T asks one of the SS the questions - How long have you been living in the U.A.E? When did you arrive in the UAE . Elicit answers for the usage of for/since. rules for For/since in the context of present perfect continuous to be written on the board/prepared for IWB Use CCQs to check

While listening (10-12 minutes) • Candidates practice the usage of verbs in present perfect continuous form and are introduced to the TL

Provide instructions on the activity. provide gap fill handouts to the candidates. Play the audio. SS answers questions individually and discuss in pairs. T to provide answer key and discuss answers. Feedback via nomination T to ask the following questions: Are the verbs action or non action verbs? Do they refer to single actions or continuous/repeated actions? Do they refer to a completed action or one which is still happening? T to introduce candidates to the timeline and elicit answers. Discuss timeline

Post listening (5-7 minutes) • Candidates to practice the use of present perfect continuous.

T to provide instructions on the activity. SS to stand in two rows facing each other, each candidate is given a piece of paper with the questions. Candidates to work in pairs and change partners.
