B1 level

Description

In this lesson, the ss listen to an online chat and revise their knowledge of future tense and past tense use. After warm up - and eliciting different forms of online chat software - the SS try to guess the topic of the listening conversation and make some comments on what type of language forms the speakers use. Following the WC discussion, the SS listen to the conversation and check their answers. The teacher asks them what language forms the speakers have used. Finally, with their pairs, the SS do a comprehension (TRUE-FALSE) activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about future plans in the context of skype conversation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for future forms in the context of future plans

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher asks the SS what type of software they use to communicate with their friends online and elicit the answers until he gets the word Skype. He then asks them when or for what reasons they use it.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The SS try to guess what the Skype conversation is about. With the three options provided, they try to make guesses about what kind of language forms they will hear during the conversation.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The SS try to check their answers with the whole class and the teacher tries to learn the reasons. He wants them to pinpoint the specific language forms.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The SS do a detailed listening exercise here by working with their pairs. They try to decide whether the sentences given are true or false. After they have finished the exercise, the teacher gives the correct answers on the smartboard and the pairs correct where necessary.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

If the time permits, (as the teacher needs to make an announcement), the SS do a small speaking exercise.
