Description

In this lesson, the students revise the present forms of the verb 'to be' and have got and has got. Following the warm-up session, the teacher uses the same forms he used in the warm up section by using contractions. Then, he asks similar questions to the whole class so that they can use the contracted forms. Next, he shows a document on the smart board on which how to make contractions is shown clearly. After that, the SS do a free practice by describing a student they choose to the whole class in turn and the whole class try to guess who this student it. Finally, if the time permits, the SS do a controlled practice by filling the gaps with the forms of 'to be' and 'have got/has got' on their students book.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher asks the names of the celebrities or people whose pictures are shown on his tablet to the SS and tries to elicit descriptive information about them by asking questions with to be and have/has got.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher asks different questions by using the forms of 'to be' and 'have/has got' to the SS who are trying to describe the people or celebrities on the pictures.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

After all the pictures have been shown to the SS and they have been sufficiently exposed to the language forms, the teacher uses contractions by repeating the same sentences he used in the warm up and exposure sessions.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher shows the contracted forms of to be and have/has got on a word document by reflecting it on the smartboard.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students try to describe the student they chose to the class by using have/has got, to be and the whole class try to guess who that student is.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students do the filling-in exercises on their books and the teacher shows the answers on the smartboard.
