Subsidiary Aims

  • The students will have practised listening for specific information.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show ss the picture of the couple and prompt them to talk about it.

Pre-listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare ss for the audio; have ss try to find the right answers (and to guess the last one)

Students will read the dialogue, work individually and check their answers in pais

Listening (5-5 minutes) • SS will listen for specific information related to the dialogue they are already familiar with.

Play the audio and have ss check their answers while listening. Interrupt recording before the final answer to find out whether any of the students have guessed correctly.

Grammar (15-15 minutes) • Review the present perfect simple and past simple

Display the individual papers with one 'scenario' each on the whiteboard. Ask students to find examples in the dialogue that match these scenarios. Drill the examples. I add the corresponding sentences from the dialogue to the whiteboard and illustrate the differences in meaning with timelines. Finally, I elicit the FORM of past simple and present perfect simple: verb+ed (regular) / bought (irregular) subject + have / haven't + past participle subject + has / hasn't + past participle Feedback; check for meaning; CCQ

Speaking task (12-12 minutes) • Students to practise free speech to practise today's grammar

- Elicit 'to waste money on' / 'to save money' - Demonstrate the speaking task with 2-3 students - Hand out the 'Money Questionnaire' - SS work in pairs - Monitor any mistakes ss make with the past simple / present perfect simple - Time permitting, write them up on the board and have ss correct them
