Description

In this lesson, students will practice different sub-skills of listening including listening for gist and for details within the context of the different roles of women and men. Students will also practice speaking in their pre-listening and post-listening tasks.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about different the roles of men and women

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a debate on the different roles of men and women in modern socities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

•T will start the lesson by showing a picture of a husband and wife and asks Ss the following: Do you think the wife is working? How about the husband. do you think he is helping her out? Should he?

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

•T pre-teaches some of the vocabulary included in the text by giving students a matching activity with sentences included in the listening part. T gives clarification and drills pronunciation if needed In groups, Ss discuss the following: In what ways do you think men and women are different? • T tells students they are going to listen to two newlyweds and their friend: Naomi, Polly and Matt, discussing the roles of men and women and their review about a book namely, WHY MEN LIE AND WOMEN CRY?. (T puts picture of them and the cover of the book on WB for students to visualize). •Ss are given exercise 5 and have time to read sentences a)-e) before playing the recording.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening task

•T tells students to order the sentences previously read according to what speakers said first in the listening . •ICQs: Listen to Noami, Polly and Matt and put the following sentences in the order they first talk about. •Ss check answers in pairs. WCFD.

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed and deduction listening tasks

•Ss are given exercise 5)c and read questions 1-7.before playing the recording. Ss listen and answer questions individually and then check their answers in pairs. •FB: Answer keys are to be given. •T gives Ss a recording script and ask them to underline where did they find their answers. •FB: WC checking

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learned

•Ss debate the following questions in pairs (preferably male & female): Should women give up work to become housewives and take care of their children? Or should men help working women with house chores? Do you agree that men don't talk about their emotions? why? why not? When women talk about their problems, do you think they want sympathy rather than solutions? •WC Mingle if time. •Questions are written on WB in huge font size. T monitors and error correction FB is provided. •Couple of answers are shared among class.
